Either we all work together, or Trial will come out losing

The TrialGP manufacturer's representative analyzes the negotiations with the FIM and Sport7, organizer of the World Championship, starting on May 19th.

After a lifetime linked to the world of trial with GasGas, Albert Casanovas is an authoritative voice to review Trial's current situation. Currently, Casanovas is the trial manufacturer's representative in the TrialGP World Championship and has actively participated in the meeting held in Barcelona with the FIM and Sport7 (Championship promoter). The work achieved by the three parties in that meeting resulted in a satisfactory agreement, allowing the TrialGP World Championship to start as normal on May 19th in Camprodón, Girona.

You are the Trial manufacturer's representative before the FIM. Can you tell us what the work of this figure consists of?
"My main function is the mediation between the group of manufacturers and constructors of trial bikes and the FIM. Sometimes, builders have certain interests we need to make clear to the FIM. My job is to collect all these requests and proposals from the builders and transmit them to the FIM."

After the agreement with the FIM, how do you see the 2018 TrialGP season?
"After the last meeting we had in Barcelona with the topmost leaders of the FIM and also with the promoter of the championship, Sport7, I see that now that all three of us are moving along very similar lines and I sincerely believe that we have a great project that will allow us to complete a good season. For the sake of Trial, either we all work together and do not fight individually, or it will be Trial itself and the World Championship that will come out losing."

What is the main change that fans will notice?
"The highlight is that we agree that Trial fans can go by motorcycle on the day of the event. This is important because all the fans want to see their idol riding a motorcycle, which is a great step forward for our sport. Progressively, the interests of the three parties are aligning and I think we have taken a good way forward."

"I think we currently have two great weapons in the TrialGP World Championship."

What other changes stand out in the agreement?
"The FIM have asked for there to be two runs through the zones on Saturday this year, and that it should be the second run that was to determine the starting order in the race, and whoever won this run should be rewarded with some points in the championship. The manufacturers, all of us in general, did not see that as being coherent and, following that criterion, it has been agreed to eliminate those bonus points in the Saturday ranking, because we considered that it was a great injustice for the rest of the participants. Yes, there will be two classifying runs, in the first the order will be determined by a draw and the second will start according to the result of the first run. It will be this Q2 that will establish the starting order for Sunday's trial."

How does this new season look to the GasGas riders, and with Jeroni Fajardo returning to the brand?
"I think we currently have two great weapons in the TrialGP World Championship. There is no doubt that Jeroni Fajardo is a rider who can give us a lot of great results. I see that he rides in a relaxed way and that he is happy with the response he gets from his bike. In general, I think that last year he took a very important step forward, both in riding and in results."

And the young Jaime Busto?
"We have the great promise, youth and spontaneity of Jaime Busto, who last year achieved third place in the World Championship and I think he will continue to evolve and surprise us. Jaime until recently was a promise, and now he is a reality. It is true that he is very young and there are many nuances that have to be perfected, but I believe that at the end of the season Jaime will give us a lot to be happy about."
