The extremely slippery conditions of Saturday's special stage due to heavy rains turned into the most complicated qualifying round of the two-year history of the new TrialGP format. All riders penalized with the maximum score and the order of departure of the following day was decided by means of a drawing, whose result obliged Jeroni Fajardo to open the track on Sunday.
Despite the enormous difficulty that this means, the GasGas rider has overcome the handicap of not having any previous reference and pulled out his best driving. A solid performance that has led him to finish the first lap in fourth position and lead an amazing comeback in the second lap, finalizing in the second box of the podium of the Italian Grand Prix. A result thanks to which Fajardo is second in the TrialGP standings, only 3 points behind the leader.
Young rider Alex Canales completes the good performance of the GasGas bikes with a third place in the Trial 125 class in Italy.
The Motegi circuit will host the second round of the championship from June 7 to 9, the GP of Japan, the only event with a double score of the TrialGP 2019 World Championship.
"We have begun the championship very well. Yesterday’s qualifying was a little strange and the order of departure of the draw was not fair for us. Despite this, he has taken advantage of the few positive effects that means opening the track. It has been Jeroni's best performance with GasGas even not having achieved the victory as he did in Japan last year. I have seen him constant and at a very high level, and the few mistakes he has made may have been the result of the judges' adjusted decisions, penalized, above all, by the fact of being the opening rider. The positive fact is that we have seen the best Fajardo in the first race, when normally that usually comes later in the championship. That makes us to be very optimistic, because we started the World Cup with an excellent result and a great feeling of strength".
"I am very happy to have started the TrialGP World Championship so well. After all that happened yesterday in the qualifying, it has been a very difficult day for us. We faced a very tough trial, under very difficult conditions. Last night it rained a lot and opening the track is always difficult, but we never gave up believing that we could succeed. I did not feel comfortable in the first lap. We were driving well, but the judges and the race itself have not allowed us to show how well we were performing. Despite this, we have not dropped our guard. We continued to push, and, thanks to this attitude, the second round went very well, and we recovered positions until achieving a final P2. A well fought second place. I want to thank the whole team for the effort they have made to get this podium in Italy”.
